Expanding the number of demoplots in Tanzania
Agrics Tanzania plans to set up another 10 demonstrations plots in Maswa, Meatu and Geita and 5 more plots in the surroundings of Shinyanga and Kahama. The plots are used to show smallholder farmers the differences in output that the use of quality seeds and fertilizer can bring. Being a poor smallholder farmer, you want to be sure that investing the little money you have in agricultural inputs pays off. 'Seeing is believing', is what many farmers think. The demonstration plot give them clear evidence.
The part of the land where fertilizer and topdress have been used shows taller maize plants with wider leaves. Besides, these plants are better resistant to diseases and drought. To ensure the farmer attains maximum output, Agrics also offers training through out the crop life cycle - from land preparation to post harvest handling. Many farmers in Tanzania, for example, still burn their compost while it is full of nutrients. By sharing useful knowledge on agriculture smallholders are able to further improve their profits from the land in the future.
